Today Lipson's textbook A Russian Course is not much, if at all, used. To be sure, it has gone out of fashion. Times have changed. The students in Russian classes in North America are of a different ilk, being in large measure the offspring of recent Russian immigrants. (They are usually referred to as: "heritage speakers".) New pedagogical theories prevail, such as the insistence on "communicative competence". However, those of us of un certain âge recognize the influence of Lipson's ideas and methods in the work and practice of the younger generation of Russian teachers, many of whom, sadly, have never heard of Lipson. As I said earlier, his legacy lives on.
