На другой стороне планеты в участок народ тоже отвозила Блэк Мэрайя, о которой есть стихи:
Must be Black Maria that I see // But I hope it is // Ain't comin' for me (дальше там употребляются формы вроде done begun, такая стилизация под Black English).
Сейчас BM называют в Британии машину, на которой возят из тюрьмы в суд, но слово американское. О происхождении этого названия говорят следующее: The origin of this term is equally uncertain. The OED lists the first usage as the Boston Evening Traveller from 1847 which mentions them as a new type of wagon. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable suggests the name came from Maria Lee, a large and fearsome black madam who (в смысле whom) the police would call on for help with difficult prisoners
