Date: 2008-07-11 06:32 pm (UTC)It has been suggested that the offered work is in fact a portrait of Vladimir Mayakovsky, whom Repin first met through Kornei Chukovsky in 1915. Repin very much wanted to paint Mayakovsky, but changed his mind after the poet shaved off his hair. Given Repin's skill at capturing the essence of his sitter's appearance, it is very possible therefore that Poet Futurist - as the title implies - is a generalised and imaginary depiction which was not painted from life. The work is executed on domestic linoleum, an alternative medium which Repin sometimes used after the Revolution when proper art supplies were scarce. The loose handling of the paint throughout the composition suggests this might be a left-handed work, as around this time Repin had begun to lose the use of his right hand.
